In honor of Hanukkah a physics laboratory at Hebrew University in Jerusalem has built the world's tiniest hanukkiah (menorah for Hanukkah). The hanukkiah, which is the size of a dust speck, demonstrates the revolutionary abilities of the lab's Nanoscribe system.
 
The Jerusalem-based laboratory, part of the Peter Brojde Center for Innovative Engineering and Computer Science, focuses on applying scientific discoveries into ground-breaking technology.
 
As part of its state-of-the-art research, Brojde lab recently became home of the first and only Nanoscribe system in Israel. To demonstrate the Nanoscribe's capabilities in constructing miniscule three-dimensional structures, Yossi Kabessa and Ido Eisenberg, two doctoral students at the lab, recently built the tiniest hanukkiah in the world.
 
Standing at less than a tenth of a milimeter and invisible to the naked eye, the microscopic menorah is built of building blocks measuring 100 nanometers.
 
Professor Aharon Agranat, Director of the Brojde Center, notes that his laboratory specializes in technological breakthroughs called "heterogeneous integration" that allow the combination in one system of various abilities such as portability, sense, data processing and communication.
 
The Nanoscribe system's capabilities are crucial for the lab to develop innovative "heterogeneous integration" technology, which has very practical applications.
 
An example of the technology's potential is the creation of a physical interface between electronic signal processing devices with opto-electronic devices. With such technology it would be possible to build a new type of network able to sense its surroundings and influence it directly. Such a breakthrough would bring a revolution to the fields of medicine, environmental protection, military and the war on terror.
 
Another groundbreaking technology which the Nanoscribe's capabilities can help the Brojde lab develop is known as "lab-on-a-chip," miniature systems that allow execution of chemical and biological process and physical measurements of samples ranging from nano-liters to micro-liters.
 
With "lab-on-a-chip," instead of bringing patients and samples to a lab, it is possible to bring the lab to the patient and send results through a network to a source for evaluation and appropriate action. While the technology already exists, Professor Agranat comments that it is far from realizing its revolutionary practical potential, and that Nanoscribe's production technology may be a foundation stone for developing the necessary complex combined systems.

Ezra was a 2-year old boy who needed a bone marrow donor which could save his life. No one listed in the donor registries was a match.  There are thousands of swabs containing DNA to be tested lying around labs, but are not being tested for lack of funds.  (It costs  $54 each)

The Maccabeats, a Jewish acappella group, put a Chanukah video on YouTube to raise money for processing the DNA swabs.  They raised $80,000.

Everyone is making a big deal of Thanksgiving and the first day of Chanukah falling on the same day. In 2006, Purim, Pi Day and Inupiaq Day ALL fell on the same day, and hardly anyone noticed.

Strange, because you'd think such WIDELY celebrated holidays all falling together would have caused chaos with crowded stores and traffic jams.

What food could be served for such a day?  Well it should be possible to make something that is a cross between a pie and a hamentaschen. And make it with berries and seal fat.

Purim is the 14th day of Adar.  Pi Day is the 14th day of March.  Inupiaq day is, I think, the second Monday in March.

In addition to these 3 holidays, it was also Einstein's birthday.  But Einstein's birthday always coincides with Pi Day. Sort of like Boxing Day and the first day of Kwanzaa.

  -  But then I decided that today was probably the 735,183 since the first day of the year 1 CE based on 365 + 1/97 days per year.  And 08:09:10 am was after approximately 0.3397 of the day had passed.  So I went with the number I used.  (After all, the specialness of the second is based on the CE calendar.)

So, the United Nations felt that it is racist to believe in Israel as Jewish country, which still has churches, mosques, and a huge Bahia temple, and whose population includes Christians, Muslims, and Druze.  However, they had no problem with Saudi Arabia which forbids any Jews from entering the country, and does not allow any religion except Islam to have a house of worship or be practiced in public.

The resolution was reversed in 1991.  The reversal passed with 111 for, 25 against, and 13 abstentions.

As reported in depth by Lexington NBC affiliate LEX18, Whitley County High (Whitley County, Ky.) cross country runner Codie Thacker voluntarily forfeited her spot in a regional championship race after her coach drew bib No. 666 for the runner. Thacker and her coach argued that she should be allowed to switch her number, but race officials refused the request.

Those officials would later deny that Thacker claimed she needed to change bib numbers for religious reasons, though the junior insists she was explicit about her motivation. To her, running with the number 666 on her chest would have signified a serious breach in her faith.

"I didn't want to risk my relationship with God and try to take that number," Thacker told LEX18. "I told them to mark out my name because it makes me sick just thinking that my name is associated with that number."

The result was a third straight season when the cross country runner has fallen just short of the state meet, even though she had aggressively trained for the regional championship race since June. Thacker had hoped to earn headlines for her performance on the trails. Now she's getting attention for something else entirely.

What is the shortest natural number that can not be described by a phrase shorter than one hundred letters?  This is a paradox, because I AM describing it in a phrase shorter than one hundred letters.

Can there be a number that can not be described in one hundred letters or fewer?  There must be.  There can only be 26^100 (about 3.1429 x 10^141, or three sexquadragintillion) phrases with one hundred letters.  Which is an awful lot.  There aren't even that many atoms in the universe, according to the scientists. But there are aleph-null natural numbers.

For example:  five sexquadragintillion, seven hundred four octatrigintillion, three septentrigintillion, four hundred seventy eight duotrigintillion, sixty untrigintillion, five hundred thirty eight trigintillion, sixty seven octavigintillion, ninteen septenvigintillion, seven hundred six duovigintillion, twelve.

General Order No. 11 was the title of an order issued by Major-General Ulysses S. Grant on December 17, 1862, during the American Civil War.

It ordered the expulsion of all Jews in his military district, comprising areas of Tennessee, Mississippi, and Kentucky. The order was issued as part of a Union campaign against a black market in Southern cotton, which Grant thought was being run "mostly by Jews and other unprincipled traders." While permitting some trade, the United States licensed traders through the United States Army, which created a market for unlicensed one. Union military commanders in the South were responsible for administering the trade licenses and trying to control the black market in Southern cotton, as well as for conducting the war. Grant issued the order in an effort to reduce corruption.

Following protests from Jewish community leaders and an outcry by members of Congress and the press, President Abraham Lincoln ordered this revoked a few weeks later. During his campaign for the presidency in 1868, Grant repudiated the order, saying that it had been drafted by a subordinate and that he had signed it without reading it during warfare.

Half-Chewed Cole Haan Wingtip
Introducing Half-Chewed Cole Haan Wingtip by the emerging canine artist, Jack. This unique presentation of a meticulously destroyed dress shoe is the first of its kind by Jack. The piece features absent toe and vamp portions of the shoe, removed through a secret chewing process, known only by the artist, with razor-like precision but requiring brute strength. The shoe has been severed painstakingly from the upper fine-grain leather through the inner lining to the bottom sole. Half-Chewed exhibits only the finest craftsmanship, as is characteristic of works by Jack. For the performance aspect of the piece, the artist ingested the dissected portion of the shoe. In a post-modern twist on interdisciplinary performance art, there was no audience for his act of passion.

The work has been interpreted by contemporary art critics as a statement on class in the wake of the American recession, a painful and complex subject for the modern American dog. Due to the nature of the artist's process, the collector who places the winning bid will no doubt hear gasps of "How in the hell?," "Oh my God," and "Was he using a chainsaw?" upon displaying the piece.

About the Artist

 
Jack has been active for some time in the world of artistic defacement popularized by prominent figures such as Banksy. However, only recently have his works received critical acclaim through public notoriety and the rise of social media. He is a two-year-old Dalmatian mix who started his life on the streets of rural Virginia before being detained by a county animal control facility and then adopted by his current owner, whose many possessions have become blank canvases for Jack's defacement techniques. Some of his earlier performance and mixed-media works include Berber Carpet Removal, 400-Thread-Count Sheet Shredding No. 1, A Million Pieces of a Bluetooth Headset, Exposing the Mysterious Innards of a Couch Cushion, Urinating on My Owner's Sister's Bed, Freeing of the Garbage from the Shackles of the Glad Bag, and of course, the well-known 400-Thread-Count Sheet Shredding No. 2.

This listing is only for the artist rendering of the left shoe. The right shoe is reserved for a well-dressed amputee. The artwork will be packaged in a presentation-worthy box for the winning bidder. Proceeds from the sale of Half-Chewed will be applied to replacing items destroyed for the sake of canine art.

I am seriously starting to get worried because I cannot seem to find an answer that satisfies my what is going on with the number 26. My first apartment was 426 my first child was born in 126 everything that happens in my life happens on the 26 it was not until my father passed away did I know that he was born 1926. Back in high school, my buddy and I started dating our girlfriends on the 26th of the month and the 10th of the month so we would always put 2610 EVERYWHERE. Well, we got older and girlfriends became ex girlfriends and we moved on. A few months later, he mentioned to me about how he would always see 26. I didn't really think anything of it until I started seeing the same number. Not 10, but 26. I, to this day still see it. I found I see it when I need someone. The address was 26. I have been in some trouble in the past year and every time I go to court, I see 26 all over the place like someone is watching over to make sure I got through everything okay. It's really something else.

All of your accounts of 26 just make it soooo much more real. I know it means something more than many of us know. I think it just shows that someone is watching out for us. Seriously insane.

I have noticed for the last 10 years that 26 is always poppiing up in my life. I knew it had a meaning and I have been serching high and low for some answers. For example my birthday is July 26 and on my 26th birthday I was 26 weeks pregnet.
