I was in a line to buy cronuts this morning.  There were 120 people in line when the bakery opened at 8 am.  (I was 10th on line, having shown up at 6:09.)

6.2831853071...

The diameter of a circle is equal to the diameter of a circle times pi.  It is also equal to the radius of a circle times tau.  Tau is twice pi, approximately 6.2831853071.  Many people (myself included) feel that we should use tau instead of pi.  It would make measuring angles in radians more intuitive.

Pi day is celebrated on March fourteenth, 3-14.  Tau day is celebrated on June twenty-eighth, 6-28.  Yesterday was Tau day.

A group of 8 of us went out for pizza for dinner last night for no reason other than I wanted to try this place.  We ordered a couple of pizzas.  My brother was wearing a math shirt, so a man from the next table came over to us, and we talked about math a bit.

A bit later he came over to us and commented "I see you're celebrating Tau Day with two pies."

Some nature preserve project had us count horseshoe crabs along the beach.  We counted 22:  2 females and 20 males.

This is 2 of the crabs, mating.  The female is the larger one.   The black things around the edge of the picture are our boots.

An echidna's penis has 4 heads. When a male echidna has sex with a female echidna, one side of the penis seems to shut down, leaving only two out of the four heads in use. The next time he mates, the heads on the other side will be used.

2226

Girls in miniskirts and high heels; rabbis in black hats and white Shirts; the revelry of the Gay Pride parade in the background - this is Friday night in Tel Aviv and a Shabbat for the record books.
Exactly 2,226 people gathered at Hangar 11 at the Tel Aviv Port to participate in the record making largest Shabbat meal ever, organized by White City Shabbat, the Tel Aviv-based NGO that organizes public shabbat meals once a month at the Goren Synagogue on Modigliani Street, as well as other events geared toward the English-speaking and olim community that include holiday learning classes, chalah baking classes, and religious lectures. Sponsors of the Guinness event include the Tel Aviv Municipality.
White City Shabbat is as popular for its monthly Shabbats as Tel Aviv is notorious for secularism.  “One of the reasons we started White City Shabbat is because Shabbat doesn’t need to be in the domain of the religious,” co-founder Deborah Danan said at the start of the event. “For those that don’t have family here, White City has become an alternate family.”
For the Guinness world record event, it took three months of preparation, 60 days of crowdsource fundraising and the culmination is 600 bottles of wine from sponsor Golan Heights Winery, 74 bottles of vodka, 1,800 pieces of chicken,  1,000 pieces of meat, 250 vegetarian options, and 2,000 people signed up, with hundreds more having signed up for a waitlist. Notable attendees are Alan Dershowitz, Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai, Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi Meir Lau, and former ambassador to the US Michael Oren.

54.75

Think your last Starbucks order was expensive? Think again.
On Saturday, a customer the blog Consumerist identified only as “Andrew” allegedly ordered a massive, 60-espresso-shot 128-ounce milkshake, which would have cost an astounding $54.75. (That’s one way to get brain freeze.)
Luckily for Andrew, he’s a “Gold” member of Starbucks’ loyalty program, which snags him one free drink for every dozen he buys. Unfortunately for Starbucks, the chain didn’t stipulate how large or expensive the drink can be. And Andrew, inspired by a 2013 YouTube video featuring the previous record holder for most-expensive-Starbucks-order, took advantage; this behemoth was his “gimme.”
According to an email Andrew sent Consumerist, the extras in his milkshake included two bananas, strawberries, matcha green tea powder, pumpkin spice… and those whopping 60 shots of espresso.
"I gotta say, it was delicious," Andrew wrote, adding that he finished off an impressive third of it. No word on whether Andrew was able to sleep that night.

Former First Lady Hillary Clinton recently revealed that she and her husband were “dead broke” when they left the White House. Her claim — which was significantly undercut by the fact that she received an $8 million signing bonus for her memoir at around the same time — has been mocked relentlessly.
However, Campus Reform’s Caleb Bonham has created the “Hillary Clinton Fund for Dead Broke Politicians” in a valiant effort to make sure future U.S. presidents and their families are not destitute when they leave the White House.
Bonham recently visited Georgetown University to ask students to donate to the “Hillary Clinton Fund for Broke Politicians,” though he predictably failed to find people who really sympathize with the former first lady.
Bonham received a total of $5.63 in donations and he plans to send the money directly to Hillary Clinton.

945

The sum of the proper factors of 945 is 975.  Any number whose proper factors add up to more than  the number itself is an abundant number.  945 is the lowest odd abundant number.  I don't know how many even abundant numbers there are below 945, but there are over 100.

Twin boys delivered 24 days apart

Twin boys delivered 24 days apart at Tufts Medical Center in Boston are doing well, the Boston Globe reported.

Lindalva DaSilva, 35, was only 24 weeks pregnant with her twins when she went into labor on February 27. Though doctors attempted to halt her contractions, they were unsuccessful.  As DaSilva went into labor, Dr. Sabrina Craigo, chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Tufts, informed her of the possibility of delivering one twin, and keeping the other inside the womb, if conditions during the delivery were right.

After delivering son Alexandre, DaSilva’s labor slowed. She was treated with antibiotics and moved back to her hospital room to wait, while baby Alexandre fought for his life in the intensive care unit.

Twenty-four days later, Alexandre’s twin brother Ronaldo was born.  Both twins are still being treated in intensive care, but doctors say their prognosis is good – and they should be able to return home by their original due date, June 18.

Delayed deliveries, which are extremely rare, can carry a risk of infection. They can only be performed on fraternal twins, who don’t share a placenta, and are only feasible if the mother’s contractions slow after the first baby is born, the Boston Globe reported.  Craigo told the Boston Globe she’s delivered fewer than 10 delayed twin births in the last two decades – and never with as much time between deliveries accompanied by positive outcomes for both infants.

This North Sacramento, Calif., ZIP code is among the most diverse in the country, Business Insider last year. Race and ethnic groups are more evenly distributed here than in most places, meaning residents are more likely to encounter people who are different. The population broke down along these lines: Asian, 20.4 percent; black, 15.8 percent; Hispanic, 27.4 percent; white, 29.2 percent; and multiracial, 5.2 percent.

170

Some facts about the number 170:

170 = 2 x 5 x 17.

170 is 10101010 in base 2 (binary). It is 2222 in base 4.

13

There are several theories as to why the number 13 is considered unlucky:

13 turns make a traditional hangman's noose. Anything less would not snap a neck.  (I don't know if that is true or not.  I have not tried it.)

At Jesus's last supper, there were thirteen people around the table, counting Jesus and the twelve apostles.

On Friday 13 October 1307, King Philip IV of France ordered the arrest of the Knights Templar.

A year which contained 13 full moons instead of 12 posed problems for the monks who were in charge of the calendars. This upset the regular arrangement of church festivals.

In ancient cultures, the number 13 represented femininity, because it corresponded to the number of menstrual cycles in a year (13 x 28 = 364 days). The theory is that, as the solar calendar triumphed over the lunar, the number thirteen became anathema.

Ancient Persians believed the twelve constellations in the Zodiac controlled the months of the year, and each ruled the earth for a thousand years at the end of which the sky and earth collapsed in chaos. Therefore, the number is identified with chaos and the reason Persians leave their houses to avoid bad luck on the thirteenth day of the Persian Calendar, a tradition called Sizdah Bedar.

In the Viking tradition, it is believed that Loki in the Norse pantheon was the 13th god—more specifically, Loki was believed to have engineered the murder of Balder, and was the 13th guest to arrive at the funeral.

98765 x 9 + 3 = 888888

987654 x 9 + 2 = 8888888

9876543 x 9 + 1 = 88888888

98765432 x 9 + 0 = 888888888

450,400

The Original “HOLLYWOOD” Sign sold on ebay for $450,400.

“I hope the winning bidder has exciting plans for it,” said the sign’s previous owner, Dan Bliss. Built in 1923 as a real-estate gimmick, the maiden set of oversized “Hollywood” letters overlooked Los Angeles until it was replaced by a newer group in 1978. The former landmark finally found a new home after being auctioned off in 2005.
