When I was a kid, we only had 7 TV channels.  The dial went from 2 to 13, but we only had channels 2 (CBS), 4 (NBC), 5 (Some local channel), 7 (ABC), 9 (some local channel), 11 (some local channel), 13 (PBS).  The U on the dial let us choose a UHF channel by turning another dial, but they never came in well enough to watch.
