A scroll at the University of Bologna is shown to be 800 years old.

In 1889, an Italian librarian’s faulty identification sentenced to archival obscurity an antique Torah scroll that has turned out to be the oldest complete such scroll in existence.

This week, University of Bologna Professor Mauro Perani announced the results of carbon-14 tests authenticating the scroll’s age as roughly 800 years old.

The scroll dates to between 1155 and 1225, making it the oldest complete Torah scroll on record.
Like all Torah scrolls, this one contains the full text of the five Books of Moses in Hebrew and is prepared according to strict standards for use during religious services

What a 19th-century cataloguer had interpreted as clumsy mistakes by what he guessed was an awkward 17th-century scribe provided the very clues that led Perani to investigate further. National Geographic spoke by telephone to Perani about his rediscovery.

.....What led you to take a second look at the scroll?

In 2012, a colleague and I decided to write a new catalog of the [University of Bologna] library’s Hebrew manuscript collection. The original librarian and cataloguer from 1889, Leonello Modona, was an educated man but not a scholar. He had dated this scroll to the 17th century with a question mark.

He described the writing in this scroll as “an Italian script, rather clumsy-looking, in which certain letters, as well as the usual crowns and strokes, show uncommon and strange appendices.” But when I went to examine the scroll, I saw immediately that it was not the “bad” writing that Modona described. These Hebrew letters were in the Oriental style, not of Palestine, but of the Babylonian tradition, and from a much earlier time than the 17th century.

.....So what did you do?

I consulted with other colleagues and experts who agreed that this scroll originated from some time between the end of the 11th and the beginning of the 14th century. I then pursued carbon-14 testing at the University of Sorrento; the results showed a date of between [the] second half of the 12th century to [the] beginning of the 13th century. In addition, a second carbon-14 test at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign confirmed the first result.

.....Even before you received the authentication of the carbon-14 dating, were there clues that led you to focus on an early date?

At the end of the 12th century Maimonides set down the rules for how to copy Torah scrolls, and those fixed rules have been followed ever since. This scroll’s copyist did not know of those rules. Those rules would have forbidden him from using some of the graphical elements found here, such as use of compression of letters, line justification, and which letters can have  “crowns” on top.

There is more freedom here. There are also passages whose graphical layout is identical to that of the Aleppo Codex [a Bible in book form], which dates to the 10th century. This all means that either the Torah scroll was made before the death of Maimonides, who died in 1204, or the copyist had not yet learned of those rules. Remember, there was no Internet then to spread the news immediately.

....So when did the University of Bologna first obtain this Torah scroll—and how?

This scroll has been at the University of Bologna library for centuries. It’s very possible that at some time it came into the possession of a monastery, was later taken to Paris after Napoleon suppressed the monastic and religious orders, and finally restored to Bologna after Napoleon’s collapse.

.....How significant is this discovery?

This is important because this is the entire Torah scroll, the most ancient entire scroll that we know of. We have fragments of other Torah scrolls from the Cairo Geniza that date to the same time or earlier, and they show identical styles to this copyist. Maybe we will find another Torah scroll that is older, but for now this is it.

The woman known as the "Octomom" was charged with welfare fraud after allegedly failing to report nearly $30,000 in earnings.

Nadya Suleman, 38, who gained fame in 2009 when she made medical history by giving birth to octuplets, all of whom survived, was charged Jan. 6, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said in a news release issued Monday.

She is being charged with one count of aid by misrepresentation and two counts of perjury by false application for aid, the release said. The mother of 14 children allegedly failed to report the extra income she earned between Jan. 1, 2013 and June 30, 2013.

Suleman is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Prosecutors will ask that her bail be set at $25,000.

If convicted, she faces up to five years and eight months in jail.

An incident that took place in Indiana in 1897, when politicians attempted to legislate an official (and wildly incorrect) value for π:

The Indiana Pi Bill was the brainchild of Edwin J Goodwin, a physician from the town of Solitude in the south-western corner of the state. He had approached the assembly and proposed a bill that focused on his solution to a problem known as "squaring the circle". He seemed oblivious to the fact that this ancient problem had already been proved impossible in 1882. Goodwin's complicated and contradictory "solution" effectively dictated a value for π equal to 3.2. He said that Indiana schools could use his discovery without charge, but that the state and he would share the profits from royalties charged to other schools who wished to adopt a value of 3.2 for π.

Initially, the technical nature of the bill baffled the politicians, who then passed it without any objection. It was then up to the state senate to ratify the bill.

Fortunately, Professor CA Waldo, a mathematician at Indiana's Purdue University, alerted senior politicians to the absurd legislation. This prompted Senator Orrin Hubbell to proclaim: "The Senate might as well try to legislate water to run uphill as to establish mathematical truth by law."

There was a successful motion to indefinitely postpone the passing of the bill, but it still exists in a filing cabinet in the basement of the Indiana statehouse, waiting for a gullible politician to resuscitate it.

In honor of Hanukkah a physics laboratory at Hebrew University in Jerusalem has built the world's tiniest hanukkiah (menorah for Hanukkah). The hanukkiah, which is the size of a dust speck, demonstrates the revolutionary abilities of the lab's Nanoscribe system.

 

The Jerusalem-based laboratory, part of the Peter Brojde Center for Innovative Engineering and Computer Science, focuses on applying scientific discoveries into ground-breaking technology.

 

As part of its state-of-the-art research, Brojde lab recently became home of the first and only Nanoscribe system in Israel. To demonstrate the Nanoscribe's capabilities in constructing miniscule three-dimensional structures, Yossi Kabessa and Ido Eisenberg, two doctoral students at the lab, recently built the tiniest hanukkiah in the world.

 

Standing at less than a tenth of a milimeter and invisible to the naked eye, the microscopic menorah is built of building blocks measuring 100 nanometers.

 

Professor Aharon Agranat, Director of the Brojde Center, notes that his laboratory specializes in technological breakthroughs called "heterogeneous integration" that allow the combination in one system of various abilities such as portability, sense, data processing and communication.

 

The Nanoscribe system's capabilities are crucial for the lab to develop innovative "heterogeneous integration" technology, which has very practical applications.

 

An example of the technology's potential is the creation of a physical interface between electronic signal processing devices with opto-electronic devices. With such technology it would be possible to build a new type of network able to sense its surroundings and influence it directly. Such a breakthrough would bring a revolution to the fields of medicine, environmental protection, military and the war on terror.

 

Another groundbreaking technology which the Nanoscribe's capabilities can help the Brojde lab develop is known as "lab-on-a-chip," miniature systems that allow execution of chemical and biological process and physical measurements of samples ranging from nano-liters to micro-liters.

LAHORE:  Fifty-six women have been killed in Pakistan this year for giving birth to a girl rather than a boy, human rights activist IA Rehman said at a symposium here on Monday.  [As of November 23]

 

 “A country where mothers are killed for giving birth to baby girls can’t be called an ethical society,” Rehman said at the symposium, titled ‘Youth emerging as a force for positive change’, meant to mark the International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women. The event was arranged by the All Pakistan Women’s Association (APWA).

From January 2012 to September 2013, there were also 90 acid attacks on women, 72 cases of burning caused by other means, 491 cases of domestic violence, 344 cases of gang rape and 835 cases of violence, he said. “Young girls are being raped in Pakistan and all we do is shout rather that do anything practical,” he said.
